Wheel throwing classes use the pottery wheel to create cups, bowls, plates, and vessels. It's a more technical skill that rewards practice and consistency, a favorite for anyone who loves the classic "clay on a spinning wheel" experience.

Hand-building classes skip the wheel entirely, using pinching, coiling, and slab-building techniques. This method gives you more creative freedom over shape and works well for sculptural or functional, even bigger scale of ceramic pieces.

Both wheel throwing and hand-building classes are beginner-friendly — the right choice depends on whether you're drawn to technical precision or sculptural freedom.

This depends on the class format:

• One-off pottery workshops (i.e. Datenight, Handbuild Club) are built around a single project, perfect for a first try at ceramics.

• Multi-week pottery courses walk you through the full ceramic process of the whole picture each week and give you room to develop your own style, from scratch to finish all by yourself!

For example, our 6-week beginner wheel throwing course covers cups, bowls, trimming, plates, free throwing, and glazing — with select finished pieces carried all the way through firing.

Unless stated otherwise, every class includes clay, tools, expert instruction, glazing, and firing for your included pieces.

• One-off workshops: our team handles trimming, glazing, and firing your selected pieces for you.

• Multi-week courses: you'll get the full experience with more of the process yourself, start to finish.

Each class includes a set number of finished pieces. We provide unlimited clay and encourage student to make as much many as possible, as we knew practice make “perfect”. If you'd like to keep extra pieces beyond what's included, just ask — additional pieces available for a fee depending on the class. We do suggest you to come back and make more instead!

Most finished ceramics are ready for pickup 1–2 months after class, though timing can vary. Ceramic pieces need to dry fully before first bisque firing and then glaze firing — larger or thicker hand-built pieces are dried more slowly to prevent cracking. As well as not letting it exploded in the kiln while moisture want to escape. We'll notify you as soon as your pottery is ready. Email also sometimes went into the junk folder, please check that or feel free to send us a quick email to check.

Working with clay always carries some unpredictability. Even with careful technique, slow drying, preheating and controlled kiln firing, ceramic pieces can occasionally crack, warp, or break during the process. We take every precaution to protect your work, but we can't guarantee that every handmade piece will survive firing perfectly, it's simply part of working with a natural material. If that really happen, we will not be able to refund you, as the class is consider selling as an experience. However, we could provide you a discount code for the next experience so that you have another chance to try again. Clay really taught us as a potter to be humble.

Wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting a little messy — clay generally washes out easily, though very light fabrics can sometimes show marks. Aprons are welcome (and there are local hand sewn one available for ppurchase), and keeping your nails short makes wheel throwing significantly easier.

We intentionally keep our class sizes small so everyone gets plenty of guidance and individual attention. Our beginner wheel classes are typically limited to 6 students, while advanced wheel and hand-building classes may have up to 8 students.

Special workshops and events may have different capacities depending on the project, format, and space, so please check the individual workshop description for details.

Small class sizes mean your instructor has time to troubleshoot with you when something goes sideways, which is a completely normal part of learning pottery.

For multi-week courses, we ask students to commit to their scheduled sessions as much as possible. Rescheduling are available depending on the course and availability, and an administrative fee may apply. Frequent switching between class times isn't possible, since it affects capacity for instructors and other students. Please review the cancellation and rescheduling policy for your specific booking before registering.

Yes! TOUCI hosts private pottery classes, birthdays, date nights, celebrations, and corporate team-building events in Victoria, BC. Depending on your group size and what you have in mind, we can recommend wheel throwing or hand-building — or even create a custom project specifically for your event.

We can host you at TOUCI, bring the pottery experience to your location, and even help arrange catering at the studio to turn it into a full event.

Yes! We call it our “Throwing Doctor” — think of it like a pottery doctor’s appointment. We’ll diagnose what’s giving you trouble, figure out why it’s happening, and work on the solution together.

If you’re struggling with a specific technical challenge — centering, pulling taller forms, throwing larger amounts of clay, plates, trimming, or something else — private pottery instruction can be much more effective than repeating a full course.

Free street parking is available directly across from the studio, and paid parking is available on the right-hand side when facing the building. Please do not park in the lot behind the studio, as those spaces are reserved.

Coming by bike? You can securely lock your bike at the back of the building during your class.

If an issue comes up with your class or finished work, contact the studio so our team can understand what happened and find a solution, we care about both the pieces you make and the experience of making them.

Yes! Pottery classes make a popular gift for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays, and a gift card to TOUCI Ceramic Studio lets the recipient choose the class, workshop, or date that works for them. Gift cards can be purchased at retail in-studio / online. A great option if you're not sure which class your recipient would enjoy most, since they can browse our full schedule and pick for themselves. Buy them an experience!

Our regular scheduled classes, including beginner wheel throwing and hand-building courses, are generally geared toward adults (i.e. 16+), since the pace and techniques are designed for an adult learning environment. If you're looking for a pottery experience for younger children, contact us directly, we recommend would suggest a family style two on one, a private family session.

For teens who are experienced or particularly keen, ask us about eligibility for standard classes; we're happy to advise on the best fit based on age and skill level.

Yes, we just want to have fun and lean new things! Alongside our regular pottery classes, TOUCI occasionally hosts special workshops and collaborations with local small businesses and makers, from kintsugi, lino cutting, matcha-making to other creative experiences that pair naturally with ceramics.
