Glaze Anatomy: Beginner's Guide to Glaze Making
Ready to unlock the magic behind stunning ceramic glazes? This beginner-friendly workshop invites ceramic artists to dive deep into the colorful world of glaze mixing and surface design.
During two sessions on November 1st 3:00pm-6:00pm and November 15th 3:00pm-6:00pm, you’ll uncover the secrets of what makes glazes tick: the chemistry behind their ingredients, how different materials shape textures and finishes, and the key to crafting durable, beautiful surfaces. You’ll gain insight into glaze recipes through the use of powerful tools like Unity Molecular Formula (UMF) and Stull’s map, while exploring the fascinating differences between firing temperatures such as Cone 6 and Cone 10. This class will teach you to read and understand recipes online!
Get ready to experiment with a spectrum of glaze effects, from glossy shine to velvety matte. You’ll mix a glaze recipe of your choice and apply it to test tiles for a physical sample of your final glaze. We’ll dive into discussions of how to analyze your results, and even troubleshoot common glaze challenges.
No previous glaze experience needed, just bring your curiosity!
This class requires personal protective equipment! Students are required to bring their own P100 mask (some will be available for sale in the shop).
