This focused ceramic workshop explores the anatomy of the traditional Japanese tea bowl designed specifically for whisked maccha. Proportion, curve, "chadamari", and rim are not just aesthetic choices — each detail supports important elements of what makes a tea bowl authentic.
The experience extends beyond clay. Together, we will explore how to prepare maccha thoughtfully, exploring sifting, water temperature, whisking technique, and tasting — connecting the bowl’s design directly to the experience of using it. You will see examples of incorrect bowls to help understand ideal form through an understanding of unideal form.
Participants will then design and form a bowl with intention, considering interior shape, balance, and how the form affects whisking, temperature, and foam.
You’ll complete the class not only with a handmade tea bowl, but with a deeper understanding of how form shapes the experience of maccha.
