The Beginner HandBuilder — 4-Week Hand Building Pottery Class
Want to learn pottery without the wheel? Our 4-week beginner hand-building pottery class at TOUCI Ceramic Studio in Victoria, BC introduces you to the fundamental techniques for building functional ceramics entirely by hand.
Over four weeks, we’ll guide you through the foundations of pinch pots, coil building, slab construction, joining, shaping, and surface decoration. Each technique will be introduced through guided projects, such as cups, salt pigs, planters, vases, mugs, butter dishes, or utensil holders, while still leaving room to make each piece your own.
Unlike wheel throwing, hand building gives you the freedom to work with clay slowly and directly — building, altering, adding handles, textures, and details without needing to centre anything on a wheel. It’s a great introduction to ceramics for complete beginners, but also a different way of working for anyone who has previously taken a wheel-throwing class.
We intentionally keep the class small and relaxed, giving your instructor time to demonstrate each technique clearly and help you individually throughout the course.
By the end of the four weeks, you can select up to 5 pieces to be glazed and fired. All clay, pottery tools, materials, glazing, and firing for your included pieces are covered in the course fee. Your finished pottery will generally be ready for pickup approximately 1–2 months after the course.
Finished the course and want to keep making? Join our monthly FriYAY Social Clay Club to explore your own hand-building projects, use eligible drop-in studio hours for independent practice, or talk to us about membership as your skills develop.
No previous pottery experience is required. Classes are for ages 16 and above.
Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy
Cancellation requests must be made by email at least 14 days before the first class. Cancellations made more than 14 days before the course start date are eligible for a refund, subject to an $85 administration fee per person. No refunds will be issued within 14 days of the course start date.
If you need to reschedule an individual class, please email us at least 48 hours before your scheduled class. Rescheduling is subject to a $30 administration fee per person and availability. We recommend checking all four course dates carefully before booking.
If TOUCI needs to cancel the course due to insufficient enrolment, we’ll contact you approximately one week before the first class with the available options.
Finished pottery will be kept at TOUCI Ceramic Studio for up to six months after the course ends. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange pickup within this period.
